Time to say 'sorry' for poor pitch comment

TRADITIONALLY it is the British way not to wash family dirty linen in public. Unfortunately, the manager of Climping Football Club, Dominic Di Paola, has chosen to ignore this time-honoured concept by airing his views on the state of the football pitch at Climping Village Hall through the columns of your publication (Gazette sport, March 11).

Why, I ask, did he not either speak quietly to the volunteer groundsman or report his unhappiness to the management committee? By his actions he has caused a person who has served the interests of the hall and recreation ground unselfishly and loyally for many, many years a great deal of upset.

The state of the pitch, at the moment, reflects both the hard winter and the effects of the football club itself bringing in machinery in an attempt to raise the standard of the ground to a level approved by Sussex County FA. Never before has public criticism been levelled in this way.

May I suggest that Mr Di Paola either apologises, publicly, to the groundsman or undertakes to take on the preparation of the ground himself – something that has never before been asked of the football club.
