Treason within

I arrived at the same conclusion after viewing the recent spate of mediaeval historical dramas and commentaries depicting the bloody internecine strife, in which Dukes, Earls, and other gentry resorted to treason, treachery, and traitorous wars to impose their chosen rulers on the populace.

Although the violence has been replaced by rhetoric in a more civilised era, it is my opinion that the underlying motivations of self-interest, treason, treachery and traitorous actions are all close to the surface.

I am at one with King Edward III, who, in the 14th century, banned all members of the legal brotherhood from sitting in Parliament, as Parliament was responsible for making the laws of the land, and he knew that the loyalties of the brotherhood lay with its members, and not Parliament or country.
