Unite, keep calm and carry on

Did he really fail to grasp that many pensioners are graduates and academics? But then he thought the Scilly Isles were off the SE coast of Britain, so perhaps we should not be surprised.

I was annoyed as well by Tim Farron’s suggestion that pensioners had let down younger voters and by the suggestion from another that a large vote from white working class explained the wins in certain areas. What we saw was democracy in action, when there was the largest turn out of voters since the 1992 elections.

In view of the outcome of the vote, it was amusing to hear Nicky Morgan say, in advance, they were confident of a Remain vote. But rather worrying should she decide she is a contender for the post of PM.

I confess I was surprised London did not manage to swing the vote in favour of Remain, 19 out of 23 areas in Kent, Sussex and Surrey voted to leave.

The high turnout of voters was very encouraging and it would be good to think this is a sign of things to come.

How wonderful to see this in elections, so MPs are voted in by the majority of the people. Voters have found they really do matter and they can change the course of history.

The effect of the untimely and tragic death of Jo Cox, was that people became engaged with politics, as they saw footage of her in action in the House of Commons and realised here was an MP of integrity, who really cared about people. She seemed so very different from many MPs we usually see in action. Voters will be looking closely at the nature of their MPs.

What I think concerns many is the nature of some of our present leaders of all political persuasions. Where do we see true leadership qualities? I was not persuaded by the words of anyone apart from Iain Duncan Smith.

I see him as someone of intelligence and integrity who can be trusted to caretake a government while a new style leader is found, but there is much dead wood to be cleared away to restore the confidence of the people.

We have left behind a failing political union, but let us hope to find a new, able competent leader who can inspire and galvanise the people

In the meantime Remain campaigners should shut up and put up, accept the democratic will of the people and support the move towards the best outcome for Britain. Let us unite, keep calm and carry on.
