Unpleasant memories

THE photograph of the new Littlehampton Academy uniform (Gazette, September 10) brought the memories flooding back '“ the unisex and androgynous look, the overlong sleeves and overlarge sizes with room for adolescent growth, the throttling necktie so loved by playground assailants.

Blazers are not warm enough in winter, yet not weatherproof enough to serve as a coat; too hot for wearing in summer but a bulky nuisance to store.

If worn daily, they become socially unhygienic unless expensively dry-cleaned at regular intervals because adolescents inconveniently possess armpits.

The Littlehampton Community School Fred Perry-style shirt and plain pullover uniform was parent-friendly: smart, affordable, fashion-proof, stretchy and machine washable.

A jumper can be tied at the waist or rolled up into a bag. A blazer cannot. All Woodard needed to do was change the logo.

The thousands of pounds they have spent on what is at the end of the day a peacock display of corporate glitz and PR mumbo-jumbo could have been invested in much-needed educational resources or selflessly donated to schools in the Third World.

Meanwhile, I note that taxpayers foot the bill for repainting and refurbishment.

Soon the novelty will fade '“ the shirt-tails will hang out, the top buttons will be undone, the tie knots will fly at half mast and teachers will waste hours enforcing the new dress code.

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt, as they say.
