Unwanted and intrusive

I WRITE in response to Jane Wood's reply (Gazette letters, February 25) to my letter (February 18).

Initially, the question was as to whether the East Beach Caf would visually impact upon the Littlehampton eastern promenade.

That it did is now a matter of history and no amount of name checking the "right" people gives owner Ms Wood the right to impose a bright neon sign upon the surrounding area, which is both garish and intrusive to the beach environment.

The 40,000-plus residents of Littlehampton, Wick and Rustington may very well not want neon or similar bright signs erected along the foreshore and what is good for Ms Wood's enterprises may not be to the liking of the immediate community.

The neon sign in question solely benefits the financial gains of the East Beach Caf's owners and offers little or nothing to our seafront.

What if the likes of the Norfolk Gardens caf and recreation facilities, Littlehampton Swimming and Sports Centre, the Windmill Entertainment Centre, Windmill Harvester, Norfolk Road businesses, and numerous catering kiosks on the eastern promenade were to install similar maverick crude and tacky brightly-lit signs?

No amount of apparent "good taste" from the likes of Heatherwick Studio or Fishtail Neon makes this eyesore anything other than an unwelcome, unwanted, imposition and intrusion.
