Upsetting to see a commercial beach

WE have to accept that Bairds do own the land around Climping Beach, and the top of the beach and in some parts towards West Beach, I have been told, even down to low tide mark, due to exceptional rights granted to a previous landowner in more feudal times.

And, in these days when farmers must diversify, they have to be allowed to raise alternative income in whatever manner they are able.

But the new commercialism at Climping Beach is very upsetting, as indicated in Robert Hall's letter (Gazette, April 22).

My annoyance is around the two large unsightly notices that have been erected, headed "Police Notification" and threatening enforcement of the on-street parking restrictions.

Enforcement to date has been somewhat lax, but will, no doubt, be very tight when Arun District Council exerts its new rights soon.

These notices serve to force motorists into the car park.

I believe they require planning permission, which my enquiries so far indicate they do not have.

The restrictions seem unnecessarily wide-ranging and I think that local people should press for an easing at the road end to, say, a "two hours – no return in two hours" arrangement, as at other similar locations, to enable dog walking and brief visits for bathing without falling into the clutches of Bairds.

The new car park arrangements and charges represent a considerable increase on last year, particularly the season ticket, which would be purchased by locals.

One hopes that some of the money will be spent on frequent, thorough litter-picking and the general appearance of the whole area.

I think it very good and clever marketing that the new commercialism is branded as an extension of the Farm Shop on the A259.

One can always "vote with your feet".

I do wonder also how all this fits with the right-to-roamers, ramblers and the Marine Access Act 2009.
