Verges left ‘scruffy’

PREPARATIONS are well underway regarding celebrating the Queen’s diamond jubilee. How disappointing it is that the Conservative administration at County Hall has failed to enter into the spirit of the celebrations, by failing to ensure that our grass verges are neat and tidy.

Unfortunately, they are so scruffy and have become so overgrown that they act as a hazard to road-users, particularly at roundabouts. Indeed, it is not so much a case of Mr Cameron’s Big Society in action as West Sussex County Council’s answer to Boris Johnson’s Big Haircut!

On a more serious note, the town was gifted The Sportsfield in St Flora’s Road to celebrate the occasion of Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee by the Duke of Norfolk in 1897. Our current Queen is celebrating her diamond jubilee, and sports facilities are being enhanced at Southfields Road recreation ground (although using council taxpayers’ money rather than them being gifted!).

Therefore, wouldn’t it be appropriate for the new building to be named in honour of this occasion by naming it the Littlehampton Diamond Jubilee Hall? What do residents think?

Whatever the weather and whatever we do, we should bear in mind the historic nature of the diamond jubilee this coming extended bank holiday weekend and enjoy an event which none of us may ever again be present to celebrate.
