Vital meeting on quarry plans near Steyning

The Annual Steyning Parish Council Meeting on Monday, May 9, was suspended for half an hour in order to address the concerns of about 100 residents who turned up to express their concerns to the council about a proposal for quarry extractions near Hamme Farm, off the busy A283 near Steyning.

Remember this does not just affect Steyning but every small town in our area.

Campaigners have already launched a petition opposing the proposal and were seeking the support of Steyning Parish Council. The council pledged their support and suggested that a group of councillors and members of the Anti-Quarry group should get together to make an analytical response. They will need to examine the 400 page planning document and make well argued reasons for rejecting the plan.

Cllr David Barling, our local representative at WSCC, said he would do “everything in my power to defeat this proposal”. A request for an extension of the consultation period (ending on June 17) has not yet been successful.

The council suggested leafleting every resident in Steyning and plans to hold an Extraordinary Meeting for Monday, May 23, to debate the issue was approved.

Publicity for this meeting will be released soon so keep your eyes and ears open for further details.

If you don’t want to see massive heavy lorry movements, perhaps as many as 70 plus a day, air pollution, noise and dust (until about the year 2033) make sure you attend this meeting and make your views known before the current deadline ends.
