Vote '˜in' to protect our precious environment

The EU debate strikes hard at issues to do with the future of humanity, and at the best of our national and regional environmental assets and values.

Realistic long-term survivability does not depend on selfish individual capitalism, increasingly conspicuous consumption or a disproportionate acquisition of wealth.

Nor does it depend on unscrupulous property development, irresponsible procurement, unfair trade agreements, or practices that lead to corrupt banking and tax avoidance.

Our futures depend fundamentally on safeguarding the very environment that generates the essential life–support systems that provide food, water, energy, climate regulation and homes with shelter.

Safeguarding the future environment is only effective if we work together as is demonstrated by the recent UN/Paris deal to cut greenhouse gas emissions where nearly 200 nations signed up to try to avoid the most dangerous effects of climate change.

Closer to home let’s consider the marine environment of our Sussex coast and the need to conserve wildlife, safeguard fish stocks, reduce the litter on our beaches, and improve bathing water quality.

Do we honestly think that leaving the EU will contribute to improving – or even maintaining – standards for any of these?

However bureaucratic it may be, EU legislation does positively raise ‘quality of life’ and help address public health issues such as traffic pollution.

Crucially, it also helps safeguard basic universal standards for human rights.

So if we leave the EU we stand to lose a whole lot more than potential trade agreements!
