New research also suggests that urbanisation is considered a potential threat to mental health and wellbeing, which is why new Out & About club member Deborah Wiggin (55) regularly makes the journey from South London to the West Sussex countryside for her exercise.

Deborah who joined the club in mid-January commented: “The Out & About Club is such a refreshing alternative to the slog of going to the gym. The South Downs scenery is absolutely breath-taking and gives you an instant buzz and the instructors really know their stuff.

“Sessions are tailored to suit all abilities and you come away feeling like you have had a good workout. As much as I love my London life, I crave the countryside and the Out & About Club really satisfies that need. It is fantastic value, but you can also pay as you go and work it around your lifestyle.”

New members can take advantage of the Out & About Club Spring offer and get three months free when they join for a year.

Deborah added: “I find myself really looking forward to the weekend and meeting the Out & About Club. It provides the perfect tonic to a busy week in the city. It is such fantastic value for the expertise and local knowledge that the instructors have to share. I think what I love most is the historical, geological and geographic insight to the West Sussex countryside that you learn from the guides along the way.”

The programme comprises a variety of guided walks, photography workshops and fitness sessions set in a variety of locations throughout Sussex and Surrey.

Kirstie Betts, Company Director at Pied A Terre Adventures says: “Our fantastic club has got off to a great start, we have a brilliant group dynamic and our current members are all so friendly and enthusiastic. The photography workshops have received excellent feedback and the guided walks and fitness classes are the perfect way to explore and feel fitter whilst being surrounded by inspiring landscapes. We feel the club offers a wonderful personal alternative to the gym, it’s very sociable and our members comment on how energised and happier they feel after one of our activities. We go with the flow of the session and often stop for a refreshment at a country pub or tea room.”

A free taster session is being held for interested new members to join a three hour guided walk at Cissbury Ring from 9am on Saturday 26th April.
