We tried it once before

YOUR feature about the low tide at Littlehampton (Gazette, March 4) reminded me of a similar event on September 19, 1997, which was said to be the lowest tide then for 40 years.

That evening, my wife, Mabel and I went down to the beach in our wellington boots and managed to walk across the width of the river mouth, although, like the Arun Divers, did not get all the way to the dry land on the far side.

There was much less water coming down the river, as this was a drier time of year, but it was a misty evening.
