What about a slat for the kids?

I NOTICED that you are offering a bench slat as a competition prize (Gazette, July 16). As a parent of one of the children from Connaught who had come up with the idea in the first place, how nice would it be if the council, instead of just putting a small plaque mentioning

Connaught's involvement, offered to put each child's name on a slat.

Not only would this be a lovely reward for such an innovative idea, but would also help foster pride and the wish to keep the bench nice. Also,

I have been told that there is a shortage in funding for this bench '“ I am sure that there are people out there who would pay a few pounds to have a family name put onto a slat.

I would also like to mention Ian Buckland's letter (Gazette, July 16) regarding the First World War memorial next to the Steam Packet pub in Littlehampton. This should not be disposed of and should, by rights, remain as close to its original location as possible.

Perhaps if someone researched the history, it may come to light that the Steam Packet had direct involvement in the funding and erection of this memorial. Or perhaps the men mentioned on it had some connection to the pub? As our nation lays to rest the last remaining First World War veteran, let us not forget all those soldiers who lost their lives.
