What does Rother mean? This is easy for me, as it links in with my usual area of study. Rother comes from ‘cattle’ or ‘bull’ and the colour ‘red.’

A quick Google search will show anyone this dates from the 16th century and Rotherfield. However anyone aware of ancient place names with ‘red’ and ‘bull’ will know these go back to hundreds if not thousands of years BC and are mentioned in the Jewish scriptures, the Old Testament. These names refer to the worship of the Sun (God/s) of Egypt, Babylon and many other places even older.
