What is the point?

I CANNOT help but agree with recent letters regarding the upsets in our local taxi companies.

Am I missing the point or isn’t the idea of having individual taxi licence plates in different areas an essential part of the trade?

Isn’t this what taxi drivers pay their fees for, so that local councils and customers can recognise each individual council’s taxis?

What is the point in having individual plates if any company can come into the area and work? Doesn’t Rother have any guidelines or safety measures to stop this? It is fair to say that out-of-area taxis have insurance, as do most vehicles on the road, but the point is that those without Rother plates and not subject to its strict rules cannot be as safe.

And these drivers are clearly not doing just the odd job, but several. They should therefore adhere to Rother’s rules.

If I had a local taxi business I would be furious. I would like to think that the council will protect our own hard-working drivers.

I have, over time, used many taxis and can honestly say there is virtually no difference in price between any of them. It comes down to personal choice and reliability.

Cheap is not necessarily a good thing. You get what you pay for.
