What’s in a name?

MAY I inquire why the Gazette refers to the store in Anchor Springs, Littlehampton, as Somerfield, when in reality it is the Co-op?

Yes, I know the building still carried the old name and the van is in that livery, but to the best of my knowledge, all items bearing the Somerfield name were disposed of some time ago.

To underline the new name, all receipts were printed “The Co-operative” and bore the store number 9838, and the membership scheme was also introduced.

Perhaps the Co-op would be so good as to explain why it made such a fleeting visit to our town? Many rumours did the rounds, but my personal view was that they did not know what to do with it, or they really did not want it.

The town did at one time have a Co-op, then known as Brighton Equitable Co-operative Society, with a food store in Arundel Road and a hardware shop in High Street.

- Editor’s note: I think Mr Benham has answered his own question as to why we call the store “Somerfield” – that is the name on the signs, so that is what we call it, and any confusion should be short-lived, with the opening soon of the new Waitrose supermarket there.
