Why no warning?

I WOULD like to express my disgust at the actions of Arun District Council on parking enforcement.

On Sunday, April 1, a lot of roads near the seafront of Littlehampton had parking restrictions come into force after a six-month break.

The restrictions are on one side of the following roads: single yellow lines on Norfolk Road, Selborne Road, Western Road, Irvine Road and St Augustine’s Road; double yellow lines on Pier Road.

These parking restrictions are for no parking from 8am to 6pm, from April 1 to September 30, inclusive.

Just after the parking restrictions started, those responsible for parking enforcement were out in force, and stuck £70 fixed penalty notices to every car parked in the restrictive areas.

I feel that, because of the six-month break in the restrictions, the council should have either placed warning notices in the streets a few days before, to remind residents of the restrictions coming into force, or put warning notices on the cars on the first day.

The fact they came out in force within a few minutes of the restrictions beginning (and on a Sunday) is a massive money-making exercise at the expense of the residents of Littlehampton.

I also feel that, unlike Arun’s more popular town of Bognor, Littlehampton residents are discriminated by not having a residents’ parking permit scheme.

During the summer, there is not enough unrestricted on-street parking during the day to cope with the number of houses (and especially flats) in these roads, for the residents to be able to park anywhere near their homes.

I note Arun put out a tender for someone to take over parking enforcement from Monday, April 2.

Was this Arun just trying to squeeze out the last drop of money from residents, or has the new enforcement company come in a day early?
