Wild flower plan music to my ears

May I just say via your letter’s page that I was absolutely thrilled to read in the recent (March 3) edition of the Battle Observer that Battle Town Council plan to plant up wild meadow areas in the local area.

This was sheer music to my ears as this is a concept that I have a deep passion for and have been working on in my role as Chair of Crowhurst and District Horticultural Society for a while now.

By encouraging the planting of wildflowers and grasses we serve to encourage the beauty of nature, wildlife, bees and butterflies back into our lives, which were a common and most beautiful sight in nature during my childhood and which I strive to recoup where possible in my role and my personal life.

I was particularly interested when the link road was built to Bexhill from the Ridge in Hastings. I held (alongside many others) genuine concerns regarding the impact of the development on our wildlife, but hoped that all the newly laid verges would be used as wildlife sites and be fully planted up with wild flowers and trees to encourage wildlife to the area as they were an ideal site to utilise.

I was very pleased later to learn from Highways therefore that the site was fully planted up with wild flower seeds including red poppies and trees; which given time should look beautiful and have a positive effect on wildlife, birds, bees and butterflies and ourselves as nature takes over. This gave me hope that other areas would follow and so to hear about the Battle plans was so great.

I will continue to promote this idea as far as I can in the area and will continue to promote the beauty of nature as a whole as I always have.

I always grow red poppy plants each year which we sell at our events to raise funds for our society, and also to raise the profile of planting up wild flowers. We have also planted up containers in the summer full of poppies which we started back in 2014 alongside the celebrations WW1 and they look so pretty.

I so look forward to seeing Battle bloom further therefore. I would also like to say how much Beautiful Battle have enhanced the area over latter years also with all their plantings which have done you all proud - they are so pretty and give a great deal of pleasure - as do the wildlife areas already in place at Battle Cemetery and other sites.
