Worthing Society wishes to thank all for condolences

The Worthing Society would like to take this opportunity to express our thanks to everyone who sent us condolences on the very sad loss of both our late chairman David Sumner and our late president Dr Geoffrey Godden.

Both will be deeply missed.

It has been a very sad and difficult time for the Worthing Society but, as the newly elected chairman, I would like to assure everyone that we shall continue our work to conserve Worthing’s unique character and historic buildings.

We have a very strong and experienced Committee who are working hard to build on the conservation principles that David established.

We also have plans to extend the popular Blue Plaque Trail which was a project in which David had a keen interest.

He felt the leaflets produced to accompany the trail formed a link between Worthing’s architectural and social history which would stimulate interest in conservation matters.

My thanks also for the incredible public response to our recent ‘Save the Trees’ Campaign in the Montague Centre.

I am sure David would have been very proud as he was always keen to see community involvement in issues affecting Worthing.

He did not wish to ‘mothball’ the town but rather wanted regeneration and development to sit well within our unique heritage environment, a view the present committee share.

There are no doubt big challenges ahead: particularly the protection of our coastal scene and open green spaces. We are looking to increase our presence in the town and are very keen to welcome
