Young musicians sing to success in contest

On Wednesday November 25 students gathered at the Forest School for the first round in the Rotary National Young Musician competition sponsored by the Horsham Rotary Club.

There are two categories in the competition, vocal and instrumental. Each student performed two pieces of contrasting music within a 10 minute period.

The winner of the Vocal competition was Eleanor Harvie with Elizabeth Elliott winning the Instrumental competition playing a treble recorder.

Both Eleanor and Elizabeth, students from Farlington School, will compete in February 2016 in the District final.

The judges, Mrs Alison Sutton, head of music at Rikkyo School and Steve Dummer, conductor of the Horsham Sympathy Orchestra praised all the contestants on their performance and gave helpful hints on where each one could improve even further.

Gordon McConnell from the Rotary Club of Horsham said this was the third year the club had run this event, the first in 2012/2013 when a very young Rosie Sutton from Millais School moved through the heats and became the youngest National Winner of this competition.
