Link Road question

FOLLOWING ESCC's final report in Your County magazine, the leader of the council says 32 million will be spent on repairing our disintegrating roads.

You will note there is no mention of the 40 million needed by ESCC to complete the finance for the link road. This bill is to be paid for by East Sussex tax payers as the link road will only receive 76 million from a debt-ridden Government.

So where will the 40 million come from - could the leader of ESCC, Greg Barker MP and Michael Foster MP let us know?

Next Wave blues

DESPITE the warnings in the Observer and the bravery of Jackie Bialeska the council is now going ahead and doing it its way.

They say we are the bosses and we must be right. We are employing attention-seeking architects but are not willing to tell them clearly what to do and keep the costs down.

We have comfortable views about a modernistic approach which seems to mean totally unsuitable shelters, an unworkable revamp of the Colonnade and an unreasonably costly Rowing Club.

The waste of money is irrational and unnecessary. Rother refuses to force the Trustees to abrogate its Arts Council antics at the Pavilion. It still cannot approve a Tourist Information Centre or build new toilets.

First there were Gubby's concrete balls at Devonshire Square then the unspeakable and unsaleable blocks of flats on Sackville Road and now this which will go down in history as an immense misjudgement.

The final indignity is that the contractor is not locally based so that the money earned and the people employed will not live here. And all the while the council is proud to announce what they are doing for Bexhill but carefully avoid saying that these schemes are county council or Government-funded ideas and not the fruit of their own designs.

No beach huts please

HOW I agree with and fully endorse Roy Goodall's letter of April 2 on the Eastern Beaches.

Hide Ad

We have objected unsuccessfully to the siting of beach huts along the Eastern Parade beaches for several years.

The hypocrisy of recent statements by local councillors concerning beach huts at Cooden is frankly sickening. "Unspoilt beaches... shame to spoil it with a whole load of beach huts" and "the need to protect open spaces is vital... pollution... increase in traffic" and other similar quotes contrast starkly with previous comments concerned with the Eastern Parade.

Would the same councillors seriously consider depositing beach huts along the beach of the western parade '“ in front of the Next Wave project? I doubt it!

We were there and we know the attitude adopted.

I hope that other electors in Bexhill Sackville Ward and Pebsham and Sidley who use the beach for recreation will not forget this at the local elections next year.

The Bexhill Caring Community is holding Bexercycle 2010 on May 1 in Devonshire Square, Bexhill from 10am to 4pm.

The bike ride will cover the distance from Bexhill to Paris but you don't even need to cross the Channel.

Teams and individual riders have volunteered to ride the distance using exercise bikes - there are still a few places left.

This event is open to everyone and all we ask is for them to find sponsors - all donations are for Bexhill Caring Community to help the charity to continue to provide services for those in need in Bexhill.

Several celebrities will be joining us throughout the day and Devonshire Square will be alive with tombolas, side shows, raffle, music, dancing and more.

Volunteers are urgently needed on the day as time-keepers, marshals, stall holders, etc.

If you can spare an hour or so please call

215116 or come along to the meeting on Wednesday April 28 at 5.30pm at 25 Sackville Road.

Special church service

AT a meeting held in March, the leaders of St Paul's Evangelical Free Church, Wickham Avenue, decided that rather than celebrate St Georges Day, we would, in the light of the deplorable moral, political and spiritual state of the nation, hold a service of remembrance, thanksgiving and repentance on Saturday May 1.

Hide Ad
Hide Ad

This as it turns out is most significant in the light of the forthcoming General Election.

From the earliest times, God has blessed this nation and consequently many other nations also.

The call to remember and give thanks for God's blessing on both church and nation are divine principles, which we neglect to our detriment.

However, neglect has been the order of the day for far too many years, and such neglect shows contempt for Almighty God.

Therefore, the third divine principle, which is repentance, is called for.

We therefore, invite all concerned Christians who are concerned about the state of the church and nation to join with us at this

service at 3.30pm on the above date; refreshments in the church hall will follow this service.

Seussical was great

MEGA-THANKS for the wondrous production of Seussical, presented by the Young BLODS at the De La Warr Pavilion theatre last week.

I was simply electrified by the whole performance and performers.

And this amazing cast acting so brilliantly in our own theatre makes me say - to quote from the play - "how lucky you are" to have the theatre on our doorstep, with such great talent involved.

So, come to the shows, give your support for these delightful, incredibly talented youngsters.

Let us be proud of their fantastic art.

...talented youngsters

A MESSAGE for all those people who criticise the youth of the town: you should have been at the De La Warr on Friday or Saturday to celebrate the amazing talents of the Young BLODS in Seussical.

Such a pity that they will make a large loss on production costs through lack of support from the general public.

Thanks for support

LOCAL charity Word in Action Outreach UK would like to thank everyone who supported the coffee, table and plant sale morning last Saturday at Beulah Baptist Church, Bexhill.

The magnificent sum of 185 was raised to directly benefit India's dying roadside poor, HIV sufferers, lepers and orphaned children.

There was a lovely atmosphere throughout the morning, marked with amazing generosity on the part of the good citizens of Bexhill and surrounding areas.

185 in India can go much much further than the same sum in England, and, as promised, it will all benefit the desperately needy in Hyderabad and Rajamundry where the charity has been established for many years with local trusted people.

If you would like to help this wonderful cause in anyway, feel free to call 01424 222075 or 07791584689 or email [email protected]

Thank you again for your wonderful support for this worthwhile cause to help the abject poor.

Light at the end of the tunnel

Endoscopy:

stage one

I drunk the gunge the day before

and was my system flushed?

An ever open toilet door

Through which I often rushed!

I thought the thing would never end

But did it carry on?

I surely was clean round the bend

Impurities all gone.

stage two

Completely different view of things

Now I'm not camera shy

But where the doctor probes, it brings...

A teardrop to my eye.

One down, one up, I'm on the screen

My innards all on show!

I'm sixty-four, I've never been...

Exposed like this you know!

stage three

All over now - who's brave and calm?

The fittest will survive.

The probings haven't done no harm,

Amazed! I'm still alive?

Biopsies taken. Now, I pray.

One never can be sure...

I boldly went where, I must say,

I've never been before.

Public-spirited lady

I WOULD be grateful if you would publish this letter of thanks to an unknown Bexhill lady.

I carelessly left my bank card in the "hole in the wall" at Little Common last Saturday.

A very generous person took it in her safe keeping and safely returned it to the main branch in Bexhill.

I am so grateful to that lady and want her to know how much I appreciate her act of kindness.

Having moved to this locality after 30 years in medical practice in London, I would like to say that this public-spirited action seems very typical of a lovely community and a great place to live!

My husband and I are now really happy to be part of it.
