Lift has to be fixed

MY WIFE and I have been stuck in the Hamlet lift (Observer, September 15) twice this year while visiting my parents.

The lift quickly becomes warm and airless: on both occasions we had to be released by the fire brigade.

In March we too were told by the lift engineer that it was obsolete and needed replacing.

He also suggested a back-up system of a stairlift might help the situation for the residents.

How much does it cost to keep calling out lift engineers and the fire brigade?

If, as the council spokeswoman says, the different lift failures are not interlinked, then surely this should suggest to her that the lift equipment is in a poor state.

Also when the lift is out of order, it is almost impossible to get a straight answer from Arun District Council as to the repair progress.

You just get passed around and nobody rings back.
