More precious parking spaces are being taken out of commission

A notice has now appeared announcing that five of the spaces at the eastern end of Priory Street and the entire bay at the western end outside the Kings Head, also three spaces between 57 and 59 Southover High Street, are to be taken out of commission between 7am and 10pm from 7th to 10th of March.

This is a new development imposed without consultation and at very short notice.

I understood that an agreement had been reached whereby rail replacement buses would use a circular route involving Station Street and the High Street and would therefore only need to travel in one direction along Priory Street and Southover High Street.

There appears to be a cavalier disregard for permit-holders’ rights to an already inadequate provision of on-street parking spaces.

Surely it is also wrong that Southern Railway, a private company, is being given preferential treatment by the Tory-led county council compared to public transport, which has to do its best to navigate narrow streets.

It is worth adding that the number of rail replacement buses from Lewes Station is extraordinary.
