New pool smaller than Aquarena

I NOTE in the revised swimming plans that, once again, Worthing Council has sneaked in a further reduction of our swimming complex.

As the largest town in West Sussex, you would expect us to be able to compete with other local towns with the facilities provided.

We already discourage shoppers with our much-publicised parking mess and now this council has turned its attention to encouraging people to go elsewhere if they want a swim.

I can accept that money does not allow us to have a 50-metre pool like Crawley, although I still believe they could have obtained one of the various grants available to pay the extra, but now they are reducing our pool still further.

I wonder if anyone who really has an interest in this town was involved in the decision to reduce the 25-metre pool from eight lanes to six lanes. This makes the pool even less attractive to hire for swimming galas, thus bringing less money into the town and less attractive for leisure swimming.

The worrying thing is that the pool will now be smaller than the existing pool, which is already six lanes wide but longer. Most of the political authorities in West Sussex will be able to boast better facilities than Worthing can provide.

Can't wait for the next local elections.
