New public defibrillators in Worthing town centre

Worthing Neighbourhood Watch's activities have taken on a new dimension in the cause of keeping people safe with a first foray into public health.

Very shortly two public access defibrillators will be installed at phone boxes in Rowlands Road and Warwick Street.

The defibrillators have been made available through funding from the Big Lottery Fund and were purchased by Worthing Neighbourhood Watch, who will maintain them on behalf of Community Heartbeat.

We are looking to recruit six volunteers to carry out the short weekly inspections, probably on a fortnightly rota. Training will be given on this maintenance task and the volunteers, working in pairs, will be transported to the sites by the West Downs Task Force.

Meanwhile, two scams have surfaced, one at local level where fraudsters left a recorded message claiming that their intended victim’s computer IP address had been compromised in several different countries, including router login details, with instructions to key in five on their telephone keypad. Our instruction is not to key this or any other number, but to hang up.

The other scam involves victims of previous Computer Software Service Fraud being re-targeted for owed money. The National Fraud Intelligence Bureau reports that scammers are returning to contact previous victims, requesting that they pay money owed for a fake malware protection service that they had provided. Alternatively, the fraudster will ask for a subscription fee in return for protection from a new threat. In some instances threatening and aggressive language has been used against victims, as part of the attempt to coerce them into sending money.

The ultimate aim of the fraudster is to gain remote access to the victim’s computer and, subsequently, access to their online banking account.
