Our gratitude to pier charity

We have no regrets about buying shares in Hastings Pier Charity.

Having just returned from a visit to the refurbished pier, we were very impressed by the standard of the work and we feel that the town should express its gratitude to Simon Opie and his team for their determination, hard work and overall achievement.

Following the tragic fire, many people despaired that the pier could be saved, but the Pier Charity Group has proved them wrong.

The restaurant with its zinc-coated roof is a fine reminder of the former pier structure and the children’s amusements, though few in number, are a colourful addition to the entrance.

When the cinema and the kiosks are up and running, we fully expect the pier to offer a lively focal point for visitors and locals.

The length and breadth of the pier are both greater than we remember.

Certainly, the overall area of the pier would seem to be much greater than those of many seaside piers we have visited. The pier offers splendid views of the seafront from the harbour to Marine Court and, westwards, over Pevensey Bay and Beachy Head.

On the day we visited, we remarked on the large number of people of all ages, armed with cameras, who were admiring and recording the scene.

Recent developments, such as the building of the Jerwood Gallery and rebirth of the pier, offer hope and encouragement for the continued regeneration of our town.

Well done, Hastings.
