PAUL O'BRIEN: Shop local and boost the economy

There have been some great nostalgic pictures shared on several social media groups recently of old Worthing shops and business that brought back many memories for all those commenting.

It was great to see some of those who operated in the town long before myself, but one thing that got me was the constant questions about why much loved shops have all but disappeared and how the high street has changed over the years.

While there are many factors, the simple biggest high street killer, as we all know, is online shopping.

It’s quick, easy and simple, however it has changed the face of the high street immeasurably in the past few years.

The answer is simple to all those wanting a more varied and interesting Worthing town centre – less clicking of mice and more clopping of shoes!

If everyone simply took a few, even two, more trips to the high street in the place of an internet shop, you would be helping the local traders hugely – who in turn employ local people, donate to local charities and invest time and money into our local economy.

It was worrying to read that for every £4 spent in shops over Christmas £1 was spent online.

I would urge anyone who hasn’t shopped local in a while to pop into Worthing – you will be amazed at the range of unique businesses in the town standing shoulder to shoulder with the bigger brands!
