PAUL O'BRIEN: Town centre transformation set to begin

A warm welcome to 2016 to you all. I hope you ate, drunk and got extremely merry over the Christmas and New Year's period.

For most of our traders and town centre shoppers I think 2016 will see some of the biggest transformations in our town centre and surrounding areas in a very long time.

First up you will start to notice the beginning of the town centre repave from this week right through to June.

Phase one will include the removal of the bandstand and the complete repave of the main central plaza square from around Montague Street, towards the Montague Centre and into Montague Place.

One of the biggest talking points will be the bandstand removal.

In the first set of meetings I was completely against this – although not very old it was a focal part of the town.

However when you look at plans for phase two, to pave Montague Place right back to the seafront, this will create an incredible, continental, plaza space.

With this all being at one level we could potentially have room to put the ice rink during the winter, a semi-permanent market offering more for the town’s shoppers, events and concerts and so much more.

We really could be creating a new twinkling gem right in the heart of the town.

Also, please don’t be alarmed about the areas being fenced off in Liverpool Gardens.

These are merely for the council to hold the repave materials and will be open again – hopefully in time for another long hot summer in sunny Worthing!
