People's Vote on Brexit: Manifesto pledges are pretty meaningless
One of the stronger arguments deployed by the Prime Minister against Members of Parliament who argue for a People's Vote on Brexit is that those members were elected on the basis of a manifesto pledge by both main parties to honour the 2016 vote to leave.
It has now been reported that the yet to be published Government immigration plan will not include the target to reduce net migration down to the “tens of thousands” long championed by Theresa May as Home Secretary and Prime Minister.
Whitehall sources say that it does not appear anywhere in the document. The pledge to reduce net immigration was a manifesto commitment by the Conservative Party in the 2017 election, so it now seems that sticking to manifesto pledges may not be so important after all.
