Position laughable

AS chairman of the planning committee, it ill becomes Councillor Livermore to criticise planning inspectors because their decisions do not accord with his wishes.

The impartiality of inspectors is the cornerstone of the planning appeal system; so much so that they are precluded from hearing cases in areas where they live, or indeed, areas where they have previously worked.

Unbiased observers will understand that the particular wishes of a council or local residents, although taken into account, cannot be given disproportionate weight in planning appeals.

The notion fostered by Mr Livermore, that the council always knows best, is laughable, given that the current car parking charges and methods of enforcement are driving away shoppers and business to the detriment of the town.
