Remembering the green houses and coal merchants

In 1934, I joined All & Co, 16 Chapel Road, coal and builder's merchants.

We were the leading domestic coal merchants and the coal was delivered by horse and cart, at the rear of the offices were the stables and mucking out was carried out early each morning.

Worthing was then a garden town and we supplied home manure to the many nurseries in the area.

I remember there were some in Ladydell Road, Chesswood and Lyon's Farm.

There were also large ones; A G Linfield at Storrington and many more at East Preston, Angmering and Littlehampton.

When the greenhouses ceased to exist, our large transport fleet was left busy supplying the new housing estates.

We collected brick from the various makers in the area and we had sandpits at Washington and Midhurst.

We collected gravel from Chichester and had our own gravel supplies at Eastbourne and Rye.

We also delivered large quantities of cement from the works at Beeding.
