REV DAVID FAREY: We should spend more time counting our blessings

I was in the queue at the chemist to pick up a prescription and the three or four people in front of me started a conversation about how terrible it was that they were having to wait. It was obvious that the dispenser was working hard and that they were doing their best.

The fact is that in this country we are darned fortunate! We have an NHS, we have many doctors’ surgeries and chemists and hospitals and so on. I am aware that having had cancer how without the NHS I would now be dead. I am aware of other places in the world, like Ghana where three mothers to be can go to hospital and only one can come home with a healthy baby. Illness is rampant and there simply aren’t the facilities to help.

We all have a tendency to grumble now and again, but sadly there are those who seem to make it their life’s work! There really is a need for some people to get a life! We have to wake up to the reality around us. Life has many ups and downs and is not perfect. If we expect perfection we shall be severely disappointed. So we learn to make the best of it and cope. Where there is an injustice it is right to oppose it and if we can make the world a better place with a positive contribution and constructive criticism so much the better. As the old Sunday School song reminds us we would do well to spend more time counting our blessings!

Too much offence is felt when another’s innocent and harmless enjoyment of life impinges upon others. Too much emphasis is placed today on the individual’s ‘rights’, instead of appreciating that we all need to learn to tolerate one another that bit more. I am not a fan of heavy metal music, but if someone else wants to moderately enjoy their pleasure who am I to object? If a doctor is spending a long time with one patient then who am I to complain if I expect my doctor to spend longer listening to my woes?

It is a fact that resources and services are not as plentiful as they used to be. It surprises me that I hear people complaining about that. It is only a few years ago that big banks and financial institutions imploded leaving nations’ economies in turmoil. This nation has tried to cut its suit according to its cloth and has coped better than places like Greece as a result! The effects of giving endless credit do eventually come home to roost! Think of that the next time you hit a pothole!
