NURSING HOMES: Over the years, I’ve had to deal with finding nursing and care homes for my parents and Mike and deal with all the problems it brings. It is very, very stressful. When you are well past retirement age, all you want is a peaceful life and security. But everything to do with dealing with the best care you can find for loved ones involves so much and dealing with finances is a real problem, since most care homes charge anything from £700 to £1,000 a person per week and nursing homes are even more expensive. The procedure for dealing with all this is not easy and I really don’t know how people without the know-how cope with it all. You get mountains of paperwork, have to make many phone calls and can be frightened to death by hard up authorities into selling your property. I was recently given details of Charging for Residential Accommodation Guide 2011 (www.dh.gov.uk ). A person named Paul Lewis first wrote an article for Saga Magazine in 1994. He pointed out no-one has to sell their home to pay their residential care fees if they are determined not to do so. If you are in such a position, I suggest you try e-mailing Paul Lewis on [email protected] to find his articles. I cannot give details to you, as it is ©Paul Lewis 2010. HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY: Rodmell Horticultural Society recently held a very good meeting and also had a very good speaker. Sadly, I’ve thrown the leaflet with details out, so can’t remember his name. It may have been Geoff Stonebanks and I remember the talk was called Gardening by the Sea. I know he lives at Bishopstone and is an award-winning garden designer. Rodmell Spring Show this year will be in the village hall on the afternoon of Saturday March 30. Looking ahead, the Summer Show will be on August 17 and I’m sure helpers will be needed with the planning.

SAD NEWS: Sadly, I have to report that Michael Isitt of The Paddocks died recently. I always referred to him as Mike the Bike, because he loved cycling and was always determined to get on his bike, no matter what had happened to him health-wise. He was a lovely, polite, well-spoken man with a lovely charm about him. I used to belong to the same choir as him, many years ago and he was a very popular member. It was an absolute pleasure to have known him. Condolences go to his wife Christine and his family.
