ROTARY ROUND-UP: Out and about with the West Worthing club

Rotarians have no reason to be bored with life – it has been an action-packed summer and there is much more to look forward to as the darker evenings close in.

The Worthing Carnival in August proved to be one of the most successful ever.

It was all hands to the pumps for two days of fun filled activities.

Classic cars adorned the Steyne and a variety of food stalls from hog roast to Thai delicacies tempted the palate, with a beer tent to help wash the food down.

The tea rooms were also very busy, and for the youngsters there were bouncy castles of all shapes and sizes and an amazing circus tent where young and old tried unicycling, juggling, stilts and a bit of hula-hooping followed by the circus show.

All afternoon local bands and singers entertained us with a great variety of music.

On Bank Holiday Monday a record number of floats, bands, dancers and community groups made an exceptionally colourful carnival procession whilst the activities on a crowded Steyne Gardens continued with music, food, performers and the now popular dog show.

Our Broadwater car boot sale had to be postponed because of the weather, but went ahead successfully in early September.

Again, for Rotarians it was all hands on deck and those who thought they had escaped the 5.30am roster were disappointed.

However, as the sellers’ cars arrived there was a sea of activity; boxes were unpacked and a throng of eager early bird buyers jostled to what the bargains were on sale; the hours just flitted past.

On a more sociable level West Worthing Rotary Club members met for a leisurely ramble from pretty Amberley to the Black Rabbit at Arundel for a well earned glass of wine.

Thereafter all repaired to Rotarian Sue Worthington’s house where a generous barbecue rewarded their efforts.

There has been much to interest members at the regular Tuesday evening Rotary meetings at the Tudor Close Pub in Ferring.

Members were given a demonstration of how ‘Bingo for the Blind’ worked, which was originally invented by a Rotarian.

Topics for after dinner talks included the Worthing connection with the International Brigade of the Spanish Civil War; councillor Bryan Turner taking the lid off Worthing’s economic regeneration, while Mark Gordon, audience development officer for Worthing Theatres, looked at the unique history of the four theatre venues in Worthing and outlined possible plans for their future.

As the evenings close in there is much to look forward to.

Our association with the Queen Alexandra Hospital Home (QAHH) continues where West Worthing Rotary darts team pitch themselves against the QAHH team each month.

Teams are evenly matched and the games swing back and forward, but everyone has a good time.

Autumn is when the Rotary District Sports activities kick off and teams from West Worthing travel all over the surrounding area meetings and enjoying knock out matches in darts, snooker, golf cribbage, skittles and quiz contests.

It is also this time of year that sees a group from the club go off to meet Rotarians from all the other clubs in the region and enjoy the events of the two-day district conference at Eastbourne.

Apart from a scheduled quiz and barn dance, other events are being planned and you are welcome to join in.
