ROTARY ROUND-UP: The youth deserve our full support

The Rotary Club of Worthing always has its motto of ‘service above self’ at the fore of its planning and supporting of local events.

The community of Worthing is of paramount importance to all our members and life as a Rotarian can be extremely busy, as well as very rewarding, as we spend weekends marshalling a great number of events in our hi-vis jackets, collecting in town for various extremely worthwhile causes and responding to disasters abroad by organising fundraising events around the town.

A strong emphasis on supporting and encouraging the youth of the town involves our Youth Speaks competition where the team from Sir Robert Woodard Academy won our local round and then went on to win the next area round, ending up competing against teams from across the whole of the South East.

We have also recently organised a Young Writer competition with 51 entries being judged and the winners being sent off to the next round.

At Easter we sponsored a Scout attending a leadership training residential course over the Easter holidays. Youngsters attending this course come back with such renewed confidence and a strong desire to help others that many go on to become leaders in their community groups.

For the physically and mentally disadvantaged youngsters of our town, a day trip to Chessington is organised in June with Rotarians accompanying staff and pupils from Palatine School who will come back from a fabulous fun day out somewhat wet but elated by the great time they have had.

We are so grateful to Chessington World of Adventures that they annually allow Rotary clubs to take groups of youngsters for a day out at considerably reduced prices.

Another event coming up on June 16 for youngsters is the fabulous children’s parade and Rotarians are delighted to be helping marshall this great event when so many schoolchildren dress up in themed costumes and parade along the seafront and through the town centre.
