ROTARY ROUND-UP: Winter has arrived for Rotary as clubs face off in series of competitions

This week, Gerald Illsley, from the Rotary Club of Worthing Steyne, gives an update on the latest and future goings-on.

Last time I wrote about our club’s help providing water boxes and ShelterBoxes to the victims of the recent Haiti hurricane Matthew, the fiercest Caribbean storm in nearly a decade.

This week, a large earthquake, described as shallow, has just hit Italy near Norcia, Umbria.

The area has suffered many earthquakes in recent years, the latest just two months ago.

We have no news of calls for help and support yet, but we have news of severe destruction across the town with many historic buildings flattened, but no injuries reported.

Our ShelterBoxes may come in handy again.

And talking of helping, now may be a time when you and your friends might want to join us through our ARC Lite initiative to help with your time – not your money – and come along to our local events, supporting local organisations, and help us out.

Not a regular arrangement, perhaps just a few hours “donated”?

We are also planning for Christmas, but we have not yet heard from Father Christmas as to whether he will be with us in his sleigh for one of our events and collections around the town in December.

We hope he will and we can meet lots of you.

We will also host a Christmas tea for invited local elderly people and are making final arrangements now – more news later.

Who knows, we may ask for a Great Worthing Bake Off to provide some cakes for us.

Winter arrives for our club not when shops are filled in October with Christmas gifts, nor when the clocks went back an hour, but when the Rotary list of “winter sports” come round.

Sounds exotic and could lead to ski holidays or trips to see the glaciers, but for us it is an exciting choice of local competitions in darts, snooker, skittles and general knowledge quizzes.

Our club kicked off with mixed fortunes last month.

We were drawn against local clubs and won at darts against the Rotary Club Bognor Hotham but lost our quiz against Rotary Club Chichester – but only by one point; so it felt a bit like a draw.

Either way we are pleased to have met up with others, hear about their plans for Christmas and their other club activities.

Could we work with you and your organisation? Why not come along and tell us about your ideas.
