Route will be an asset to the town

I am very pleased that Hasting council's cabinet voted unanimously to approve the designated cycle route through Alexandra Park.

The route will be a great asset to the town and will improve the take up of cycling by families, beginners and less confident cyclists.

Hastings Borough Council should be applauded for catching up with most other towns and cities in the UK and across Europe, by allowing cycling on designated routes in the public park.

Hopefully this can be seen as the start of the implementation of the Greenway Network in full, in line with the recommendations within the Walking & Cycling Strategy published in 2015.

The Alexandra Park route can be seen as the keystone in a network of routes that, if developed, will provide safer, healthier and much more pleasant means for residents to travel around our town.

Hastings & St Leonards is a town with considerable poor health, inactivity and obesity problems.

For example, almost a quarter of local year 6 children are obese according to department of health statistics, and our town has a very high level of car traffic, and over 25 per cent more road injuries and deaths than the UK average.

The opening of the Alexandra Park route will be a move in the right direction and will help people choose more active travel methods that can help address these problems.
