Set aside a lane

YESTERDAY, I saw an adult pedal cyclist riding furiously and dangerously along Worthing promenade between Marine Gardens and the Lido, weaving in and out of young children and others and shouting at them to get out of his "****" way.

This is precisely the type of incident that those who object to the shared use of the promenade have in mind.

Now, I expect some pedal cyclists to protest that this type of behaviour does not apply to the majority (I could argue in return that one bad motor car driver is not typical of the majority), but it takes only one inconsiderate individual to cause a major injury or even death to a child or elderly person who is either unaware of the approaching cyclist or it not quick enough to get out of the way.

If it is absolutely essential that adult cyclists should use the promenade (and I really cannot see that they have made a case for so doing), then at least have a lane set aside for their use, with a penalty if they are caught riding outside its limits.

Finally, I would point out that according to the Oxford English Dictionary, "promenade" means basically "a paved public walk" - there is no mention of cycling or riding.
