Thank you for remembrance

May I, through your newspaper, thank Hastings and St Leonards Veterans Association for organising the remembrance service for the many residents of St Leonards who lost their lives in the terrible bombings on the afternoon of March 11, 1943.

I was 12 years old at the time and looking after my two young sisters, my mum had gone shopping.

We lived in Perth Road, where one of the bombs fell and, of course, the bouncing bomb that went through the bedroom of the police house on the corner of Perth and Battle Road, eventually exploding in Adelaide Road, where a baby and I believe a little boy were killed.

I have always felt that there should have been some sort of memorial service.

In fact, in 2013 (the 70th anniversary) I had hoped for an article in your paper in recognition of this terrible tragedy.

I did attend the service in front of the Town Hall but was surprised there were so few people there, possibly not many of us left now.

Well done to the Veterans Association for your magnificent efforts.

I understand there will be another remembrance service for the people who lost their lives in the terrible Sunday lunchtime raid, when the Swan Inn in the High Street was bombed.
