Litter thoughtlessly discarded certainly falls within this category.

Not only is it unsightly but also, if it is not collected and binned, it creates the impression that those living in the neighbourhood do not care about its upkeep and cannot be bothered to keep an eye on essential details – and, in turn, the risk that the nature of the neighbourhood will eventually deteriorate, together with the value of properties within the area.

So it is good to see that the Friends of Tarring Park organised a ‘litter pick hour’ last Saturday – with lollipops supplied to the children taking part.

Elsewhere, the ‘Keep Lancing Lovely’ group organises regular monthly litter picks, with the next one taking place on Sunday (May 29) at The Perch at Beach Green from 10.30am to midday.

This weekend will also be a busy one for Neighbourhood Watch with the next Crime Prevention and NHW Awareness Day taking place in South Street Square, from 10am to 4pm on Saturday (May 28), and the West Downs Neighbourhood Watch Task Force on duty at Palatine Park over three days from Saturday to Monday.

Meanwhile, the office of the police and crime commissioner has replied to Ian Richardson’s letter about the problems caused in the town centre caused by street drinkers and aggressive beggars, and Katy Bourne is to attend a meeting of the Central Ward Neighbourhood Panel this summer.

Given the high level of concern over the working of the new Local Policing Model, she had made this known last month to the chief constable, who reiterated that a robust neighbourhood policing presence would be retained, based on the severity of problems that a community faced at any time.
