TIM DREW: Websites cover range of cyber scam issues

Crawley Neighbourhood Watch has drawn up a list of cyber scam websites covering a wide range of issues, including identity theft, hacking, investment and computer takeover scams, phishing and scam phone numbers.

Three web sites in particular are highlighted, of which the first is haveibeenpwned.com which identifies incidents where a site’s data has been illegally accessed by hackers and then released publicly.

If you find that this has happened to you, then you should review the types of data that were compromised (email addresses, passwords, credit cards and so on) and take appropriate action, such as changing passwords.

The second is www.grc.com/shieldsup which offers a quick port-scanning test service.

It will test your router for hundreds of common vulnerabilities, most of which can be mitigated by the router’s administrator.

Hackers are sweeping the internet in order to identify exposed and vulnerable consumer internet routers to gain access to the private networks residing behind them.

So, whenever changes are made to your network configuration and whenever you update your router’s firmware, you should consider re-running this quick test to confirm that your internet-facing equipment is continuing to ignore all attempts at its subversion through the Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) protocols.

The third is www.snipca.com/22413, which enables the installation of browser extensions such as Lightbeam, Privacy Badger and Ghostery.

These are aimed at preventing online advertisers from targeting you without your prior or express permission.

Remember that every website you access has trackers designed to capture as much information about you as possible.

• The next meeting of the Lancing Community Panel will be held on Monday (March 6) in the South Hall at Lancing Parish Hall, at 7pm. Items to be discussed include progress on finding a suitable location for CCTV for Lancing village centre and obtaining a speed warning board on the A27, IKEA’s proposal for a new store at New Monks Farm and issues at Monks Recreation Ground.
