Warning '“ this letter is dripping with irony

IT filled my heart with joy to read about Goring Residents' Association's petition against the proposed playground on Goring Greensward.

Every right-minded Worthing resident knows that children should be seen and not heard!

It is the right of every kite-surfer and dog-walker to retain their exclusive use of this hallowed scrap of land, unimpeded by the sound of under-12s giggling and having fun.

Why do we need a playground on the Greensward anyway?

Walk along the seafront all the way from Sea Lane, Ferring, to Brooklands and you can't move for activities and attractions for children and young people.

The seafront, after all, stands testament to the fact that there's nothing our council won't do to provide attractive, fun and interesting facilities for residents and visitors of all ages.

Of course we must also fight over-development.

I for one completely understand why those living close to the sea would not want their view of the back of the beach huts blighted by the sight of swings and (ugh!) a climbing frame.

Allow this iniquitous development to continue, and the likes of Frank Gehry will be here in a flash, sticking 30-storey skyscrapers on the Greensward and messing up everyone's television reception.

Good on the GRA. If the world was filled with tolerant, forward-thinking philanthropists like them, the world would surely be a better place.
