We're turning the beach into a dump

I WENT for a walk with my dog along the beach from Heene Road to Sea Lane café on Sunday and was horrified to see so much of OUR waste rubbish littering our wonderful beaches.

Almost every square metre I looked at had some form of rubbish on it.

Bottles, glass, great big lumps of plastic, old rope and fishing equipment, you name it, you can find it there'¦so sad.

I personally removed a 25-litre drum of engine oil, half full and leaking.

Is anyone responsible for removing this mess and if not, why not? We keep our streets clean, so why not the beach?

After all, this is winter, so God knows what they are going to look like in summer, when the beaches are full of people.

I propose that a beach walk to pick up the litter would be a good idea, say, twice a year?

Would the council provide the necessary equipment and logistics to help out with this task?

Maybe a local school would like to help?

Health and safety: no item/container that was not identifiable should be picked up by the volunteers.

Instead a small marker/flag could be placed near the item so that it can be collected by the council after the walk. Sounds reasonable to me?
