Why are the Germans laughing at us?

Liberal Democrat Alan Whittaker, no spring chicken himself, smears “pensioners and the unskilled elderly” for supporting Brexit (letter March 8) while accusing Conservative MPs in favour of leaving the EU as economical with the truth.

He then besmirches Jacob Rees-Mogg by telling a whopping untruth about his moving his investment company’s headquarters into the EU.

The truth is that Rees-Mogg set up Somerset Capital Management in partnership with others, but stepped down as its Chief Executive and active management on becoming an MP.

He receives investment income from the company, which remains based in London and Singapore but uses vehicles in various jurisdictions, including Dublin, for the benefit of its investors.

It is the activities of the City that have provided much of this country’s wealth and taxation revenue.

Mr Whittaker then gives a lengthy quote that Germans would miss Britain’s legendary black humour.

Perhaps the darkness of the Liberal Democrats’ view of their fellow citizens is what the Germans are laughing at.
