WOOD: An 'absolute disgrace'

I am absolutely appalled with the plans to burn the wood pile currently residing on our beaches.

For the last three weeks we have been filtered the plans for what will happen to this extraordinary sight, only to finally be told it can be used for nothing and is only good for burning.

What an absolute disgrace from our local council.

Its understandable that we've found ourselves in a unique situation and naturally some discussion was required about what should happen, but it appears to me that any common sense ended there.

I was at the beach with family on the second day after the wood deposit before people were banned from the beach for fear of accident or incident and much conversation went on between ourselves about possible solutions.

The main opinion was open the beach to vehicles for set periods of the day and let people come and take what they would like.

Naturally signs declaring no responsibility for injury (because we're getting a freebie) would need to be erected (because we're stupid).

I was then back down at the beach when the diggers had been called in and if the argument is that the wood is now damaged beyond use its easy to see where a large part of that damage occurred when I saw diggers driving over the piles of wood and breaking it up in to smaller pieces.

By letting the community take the wood and use it for their own uses the beaches would have cleared within days.

Instead three weeks later we're still left with areas of the beach cordoned off to public use only to be told that this wood has to be burned.

I would suggest if that is the situation its chipped and free firewood is distributed to the local community.

And when the argument is raised about use of resources and taxpayers money I would guess that most people would prefer to see the wood, and their local councils' money go to good use.

Unfortunately it looks as if both will just go up in smoke.
