Worthing needs to have more to offer

WORTHING is one of the largest towns in the county, but if we want it to be one of the best places to live in the county then a lot needs to change.

The town is seriously let down by a lack of amenities so that residents are forced to travel to neighbouring towns to access.

For example, if you fancy a trip to a modern cinema, then you are forced to travel to Chichester, Brighton or Crawley.

Want to go to a quality swimming pool?

Then you must drive to Horsham or Burgess Hill.

In order to get to a decent supermarket, we get in our cars and go to Shoreham, Brighton or Horsham.

Our colleges struggle on with ancient buildings that weren't fit for purpose in the early nineties let alone now, but every attempt to improve them is met with howls of protest from NIMBYs and nay sayers.

Getting to the town centre shops is expensive.

Car parking in the town is a joke, but people have no real choice other than to take the car.

A return bus journey from Wallace Avenue to the town centre for a family of four is 12, far higher than the cost of parking.

A similar journey in Brighton would be less than half the price.

Why should this be?

There have been so many wasted opportunities to improve the town.

Thank goodness Tesco has finally been able to start developing its new store in Durrington.

I am sure that when it opens, thousands of car journeys outside the town will be saved.

Now, if only someone would build the rumoured cinema at Teville Gate and the council would get on with developing the new swimming pool, things would be moving in the right direction.

Yes, Worthing is a reasonable town. But it has stood still for too long. A small but vocal minority of residents seem happy with the status quo, let's not let them ruin it for the rest of us.
