Options Fair for school leavers

A SPECIAL Options Fair, to help school leavers across East Sussex who are still wondering what to do next September, is being held in Eastbourne.

The Options Fair, aimed at young people aged between 16 -18, has been arranged by East Sussex County Council.

The fair will be held at Eastbourne Town Hall, Grove Road on 19th June between 10am '“ 1pm, and will bring together a wide range of colleges, schools with sixth forms, and work based learning and apprenticeship providers.

Connexions and JobCentre Plus advisers will be on hand to offer information, advice and guidance.

Cllr David Elkin, the County Council's Lead Member for Learning and School Effectiveness said:

"While many year 11 and 12 students will have made their minds up already about what they are going to study or do next, many will not have. The options and choices have never been greater, but it can also be quite confusing. We want to make sure all our young people get as much information as possible to help them make the right decisions about their future.

"The Options Fair will be a great opportunity for young people to speak to stallholders to find out more about courses, apprenticeships, training and jobs on offer. I would encourage anyone trying to make these decisions to come along, find out more and maybe even enrol on a course on the day."

Students in East Sussex can now choose from a number of options for their post-16 studies including GCSEs or A-levels, diplomas, apprenticeships, or Foundation Learning.

Foundation Learning provides social, practical and work skills by putting together a personalised learning plan to help young people on to employment, further education or successful independent living.

The Options Fair event has been widely publicised in secondary schools, special schools, sixth forms, colleges, through Connexions and in other community venues such as leisure centres and youth centres.

Young people attending will be able to have their travel expenses reimbursed and will also be able to enter a prize draw for a chance to win an MP3 Player.

The event is part of on-going work by the County Council to ensure all young people get the support and advice they need to make decisions for the future.

Three 'Clearing House' events will also be held in the first week of September across the County once exam results are through.
