'Osteopath' fined for working after being struck off

Magistrates have fined a man for illegally practising as an osteopath in Battle.

Matthew Manktelow, 38, was registered as an osteopath until his name was removed from the Statutory Register in September 2007.

But he continued to practise at the Battle Osteopathic and Pain Management Clinic and describe himself as an osteopath.

Last Tuesday (September 28), Mr Manktelow pleaded guilty to one offence under Section 32 of the Osteopaths Act 1993.

During a conversation held in his clinic in November 2009, he referred to himself as an osteopath.

He was also ordered to pay 15 victim surcharge.

The case against Mr Manktelow was brought by the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC).

GOsC chief executive and registrar Evlynne Gilvarry said: "Patient safety is the primary purpose of restricting the use of the osteopathic title to those registered with the General Osteopathic Council.

"The GOsC ensures that practitioners on its register are safe and competent osteopaths who follow strict codes of conduct.

"We (the GOsC) will continue to prosecute anyone who unlawfully describes themselves as an osteopath, in order to maintain the good reputation of the osteopathic profession and, above all, protect the public."

The GOsC would not reveal why Mr Manktelow had been removed from the Statutory Register.
