Out of Africa

A SHOREHAM man met with the vice president of Kenya, Dr Moody Awori, when he recently spoke at a conference on globalisation and Africa.

Wayne Green met Dr Awori at the Africa and Globalisation conference, which was held in Kenya last month.

Mr Green said he presented the vice president with copies of the marriage certificate of Jomo Kenyatta, who was Kenya's first president, to Edna Clarke in 1942, in Chanctonbury, and the birth of their son, Peter, in Worthing Hospital a year later.

He told the Herald: "I had the greatest of all pleasures in bringing alive and strengthening our local ties with this important piece of history and proudly handed over a copy of the marriage and birth certificate to the vice president for the people of Kenya to share in.

"Part of the trip to Kenya took delegates to visit a slum area just outside Nairobi to view the harsh realities of life for those in real, absolute poverty.

"This also took in a visit and fact-finding tour of the Amurt HIV/AIDS Orphan and Daycare Centre. Here delegates met orphaned children and those with AIDS being cared for by volunteers of the Sikh community."
