Outdoor gym planned for Hailsham

HAILSHAM RESIDENTS will soon enjoy a new outdoor gym at Western Road Recreation Ground thanks to funding of £10,000 provided by the Awards For All Scheme.

The proposal to build an outdoor gym came from Hailsham Youth Council last summer and was formally agreed by the town council last November. Since then, the Youth Council has organised a small working party to look at the design of the proposed facility, carry out a community survey on the benefits of installing an outdoor gym, and seek funding opportunities available.

Some £10,000 has been awarded to the town council, which will install and maintain the outdoor gym later this year as part of a wider package of improvements to recreational facilities throughout Hailsham during the next three years.

The equipment will be specially designed to suit all ages and abilities and could include an air skier, cross country skier, double rower, seated leg press and a push up station, which would be modelled similar to a playground.

Mark Joyes, chairman of Hailsham Youth Council, said: “The news that our funding bid has been successful is fantastic news for Hailsham.

“We believe the outdoor gym will be a wonderful facility for people to use, both young and old. It could also help to improve relations and perceptions between younger and older people, and encourage them to engage more frequently with one another.”

Town Clerk John Harrison said the equipment would be suitable for most ages and would offer an outdoor fitness facility for people with disabilities and anyone who would rather not attend a gym. “Outdoor gyms are designed to provide extra facilities and opportunities to improve the health and fitness of the local community and to encourage visitors to socialise in the process.”
