'˜Oyez, Oyez, Oyez, Midhurst has arrived!'

It was the turn of Midhurst townspeople to travel to their twin town of Baierbronn in Germany last week.

The five day stay followed a visit to Midhurst by the Germans last May to celebrate three decades of friendship between the two towns.

The group flew from Gatwick to Stuttgart and then had an onward one and a half hour drive to Baiersbronn where the 17 English twinners were the guests of German families.

They hit the ground running with a visit to the historic town of Heidelberg

and on Saturday a tour of the mountains around Baiersbronn.

The group was then greeted officially by the burgermeister, Michael Ruf who strongly expressed his hope the friendship between the two towns would continue. Colin Hughes, organiser of the Midhurst twinning visit thanked the people of Baiersbronn for their hospitality.

A typical Swabian meal was followed by energetic music provided by Karl Hornung who has spent many years organising the school exchanges between the two towns. “We spent Sunday with our host families who took us to many places of interest,” said Colin. “During the day Midhurst’s town crier officially shouted our presence in the town square which has been named Midhurst Platz.

“The group has returned determined to continue and strengthen the friendship. Everyone was overwhelmed by the hospitality they received.”
